Quote of the Week

“It turns out being skinnier doesn’t turn you into Beezie Madden… My trainer noticed my weight loss, complimented me on it, and then barked for me to stop rocking my rib cage in the same breath.”

The Story

Canadian Sam Walker is your ASPCA Maclay National Champion.

Catch Me Up

After four rounds of competition at the National Horse Show in Lexington, Kentucky, Sam Walker of Ontario secured his victory in the ASPCA Maclay National Championship after a dominant performance from start to finish. As a student of North Run’s Missy Clark and John Brennan, Walker has already placed in the top-10 this year at the Dover Saddlery/USEF Hunter Seat Medal Final in Pennsylvania and the Washington International Horse Show Equitation Final. Sunday, it seemed, was his class to win.

Sitting in second behind Brian Moggre after the Maclay’s flat portion, Walker reestablished his lead in the second over-fences phase, returning as the leader and last to go in the work-off. There, Walker & Waldo seamlessly executed the 5-obstacle test, earning not only the trophy but a place on the esteemed list of previous winners. “I was hoping he would play his hand like he did. I was so proud that he thought like a horseman,” said Walker’s trainer, Missy Clark, after the class. “I would have done the same thing if I was sitting on that horse.”

Men may be from Mars, but they came to play at the ASPCA Maclay National Championship, with Moggre finishing second and Walker becoming the first male rider to win the title since Jacob Pope in 2012. Interestingly, the last male rider to take the championship before Pope was another Walker—Brian Walker—in 2001. Surprisingly, it was that Walker, also a Canadian, who helped to pair Sam Walker with his winning equitation partner, Waldo. Let’s hear it for the boys.

If You Can Only Watch One Round...

Watch Martin Fuchs & Clooney Earn Style Points in Lyon

Sometimes when watching WEG Swiss silver medalist Martin Fuchs and top mount Clooney, it can be hard to know whether you’re taking in a 1.60 grand prix or a performance hunter class: they’re just that pretty over a fence. Last weekend at the Longines FEI World Cup Jumping qualifier at Lyon, however, Fuchs & Clooney proved that pretty is as pretty does—and what pretty does is secure their ticket to the 2019 FEI World Cup™ Jumping Final in Gothenburg.

Speaking of World Cup Jumping Finals... Madden’s Got (Another) Ticket to Ride

'Ask and you shall receive' should be Beezie Madden’s motto, and one week after surmising that she’d like to qualify two more mounts to compete at the FEI World Cup Jumping Finals in Gothenburg next year, she’s added another horse to the list. Madden and new mount Chic Hin D Hyrencourt took the win this weekend in the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup qualifier at the National Horse Show in Kentucky, offering Queen B one more option to weigh when it comes time to defend her title in April. Like you doubted her for a minute.

This police horse drill is the most impressive thing you’ll watch today.

Every day around the globe, hard-working police horses are out there controlling crowds and keeping us safe at fairs, concerts, and other events. But as 7-year-old Finnegan and @lifebetweentheears demonstrate, training for the badge is no mere walk in the park. More like a walk through fire, smoke, blaring sirens, and flailing pool noodles. Check it out.

WHITESTOWN, INDIANA, USA ( heads up: LOUD video 🚨 📣 ) • Holy WOW. Meet Finnegan The Police Horse.🔹@finn_the_police_horse🔹A seven year old Percheron/QH proudly serving the city of Indianapolis Mounted Police Unit. • “We had the opportunity to attend a despooking clinic hosted by Sport Horse Inc. with Bill Richey /@mountedpolice of National Mounted Police Services recently. • It's always great to train under different people to get new perspectives on how you can challenge yourself and push your limits. Very proud of Finn. He had anxiety going through certain types of obstacles yet overcame them very quickly and shined. • Super proud of him. Fire was new and he never liked going through tarps hanging. Mission accomplished. A few police horses attended, and the rest were show ponies. • Looking forward to sharing some new obstacle ideas with the other officers and horses on the unit.” • Tag your photo #LifeBetweenTheEars for a chance to be featured. • #lifebetweentheears #betweentheears #theworldgromasaddle #equestrianphotography #bestview #betweentheears #tinyvacationonline #firewalkin #ringoffire #indianapolis #whitestown #despookingclinic #billrichey #quarterhorse #percheron #thankyou #finnthepolicehorse #policehorse #mountedpolice #finneganthepolicehorse
